THE SOPHOMORE CLASS is a mixed plate of local (Hawaii Baptist teammates Jayme Lee and Rayna Kitaguchi), mainland (Californians Stephanie Brandt and Amber Kaufman) and hybrid (Punahou product Aneli Cubi-Otineru, a junior college All-American as a freshman at Southern Idaho).

Lee, who earned the starting libero spot in the second match of last season, and outside hitter Kaufman, pressed into starting duty because of injuries to the lineup, were named to the WAC’s 2006 All-freshman team. Brandt was a Big West All-freshman pick as the starting setter at UC Santa Barbara last season, leading the conference in assists and aces.

Kitaguchi is a solid defensive reserve.

Brandt will push freshman Dani Mafua for the starting setter spot. Cubi-Otineru can’t wait to play in front of her family.
