COLT HAS SHOT AT HEISMAN

I’ve been waiting anxiously for the season to begin like I have these past 48 years since I graduated from Farrington High School in 1959. Although I have lived in Los Angeles for the past 29 years, I make every effort to watch or listen to Hawaii football games.

I do believe Colt Brennan has a legitimate chance to become the Heisman winner because of TV, radio and computer technology today making news and information more readily accessible. However, Hawaii in my opinion, must go unbeaten for him to win the Heisman Trophy!

As for Colt’s past problem in Colorado, “He who has no sins, cast the first stone!”

June Jones does deserve a $1 million a year salary as head football coach and his assistant coaches need to be paid better also! Besides his fantastic coaching ability, he has brought Hawaii football to national prominence and respectability.

I look forward to a great year like last year for the Warriors but even if they fall short, I will still be a faithful loyal fan of University of Hawaii football.

MANNY LAGOD LOS ANGELESWarriors! Go June! Go Colt!

JONES DESERVES BIG RAISE

June Jones absolutely deserves an increase, his contract is up and he has earned a substantial increase in my opinion. Not many coaches have the opportunity to rebuild a losing program into the winning program Hawaii now has. He should be one of the higher compensated football coaches on this side of the country. He by far could earn much more coaching somewhere else!

Colt Brennan, a winner on and off the field, is a great role model. We are fortunate to have him playing on our team. The Heisman, very political process. Colt, not being biased, is the best quarterback in the country. He deserves the Heisman if he has another great season and meets the criteria. Ever since his second play from scrimmage vs. USC when he went out right side and had a go at a linebacker, helmet flying and all, we knew we had someone with ambition, drive and especially someone that was going to be special!!! Go Colt.

We should go 12-0 with the schedule we have been presented. What could have been, oh well. Snooze you lose. We should be top 20 by season end with the talent we have and most likely will be home for our bowl game. I hope that better things happen bowl-wise.

Beat Boise!

APPEARANCE COUNTS FOR COLT

I think that Colt Brennan has a good shot for the Heisman Trophy. The only comment that I have is that since he will be in the spotlight very often, his presentation should be more like a “clean-cut” guy rather that the sloppy dressed and beard guy.

I met him on Aloha’s flight from Orange County to Honolulu on May 20 of this year. He was wearing a sweat pants and unshaved. Wow, I thought, this guy will be featured by the media many times this season. He is running for the Heisman and beside his ability, his appearance counts, too. To be an “All American,” one should dress and give the impression as “All American.”

KEEPING COLT FRESH A KEY

As I watched Colt develop into the most accurate passer that UH has ever had in addition to being the most productive QB in terms of yardage thrown, completions and touch-downs. Now what I am most concerned about is the breakdown of the team against any of the upcoming opponents where a comeback by Colt and the offense will be called upon to win the game.

This situation will surely happen because the WAC conference is very good and on any given occasion a team will beat a favored team at home or on the road. Now, my comments is that Colt has the uncanny ability or skill to avoid being sacked by not one but as many as three defenders around the pocket, which opens up the four receivers in route, which Colt can connect with for a score or a big gainer. I don’t want Colt to tire himself out by jogging to the sidelines and back to the huddle on every offensive play to get instructions or the next play from Coach Jones. He needs to be fresh and not tired during the closing minutes of the game in order to avoid the pass rush and connect the pass to his receivers to get the first down.

DON’T BLAME HERMAN

I am sure that Herman Frazier did his best to get UH a good schedule this year, but I believe that he did not realize the potential of this team. If he had, he would have started earlier and done whatever it took to secure some TOP NCAA competition for this season. I am talking about Notre Dame, UCLA, Penn State, Tennessee, etc.

With Boise State the only true national power in our schedule, and that game being at home, our hopes of serious national recognition are nil.

When will we get another chance to up our stock as a serious football contender? Fame and recruiting aside, the players, coaches, and fans will never get a chance to see how really good this team can be. It is a shame. I wish the team well.
