Rapid growth is putting a strain on the area’s resources



Some Ewa Beach residents and community leaders say the infrastructure has failed to keep up with the rapid population and subdivision growth during the past decades.

While the homes and jobs are needed, the burgeoning community is feeling the effects of the drain on resources, said Charles Beamer, chairman of the Ewa Neighborhood Board during the late 1970s and in the 1980s.

IF SOMEONE asks Jennie Peterson, “What’s a Makiki girl like you doing in a place like Ewa?” she’ll say, “Plenty.”

And she hopes lots of other folks will say the same. Peterson, who lives and works in Makiki as Oahu program manager for the Hawaii Nature Center, created a pamphlet that promotes the natural treasures around Ewa’s West Loch Shoreline Park, situated alongside the Honouliuli National Wildlife Refuge.
